Schools project

Employment support has always been central to Hansel's ethos, from the sheltered workshops of our early days to today's vibrant and dynamic Employment Services which supports over 200 people each year to explore employment as a lifestyle choice.

We support our customers to develop their employability and work in partnership with employers and partners across Ayrshire to create opportunities for customers to achieve their career aspirations. As a sub-contractor to Shaw Trust, Hansel is one of the top performing agencies supporting people living with disabilities into work in the UK.

One very successful initiative has been the Schools Project, a work experience programme for young adults with learning disabilities, delivered in partnership with East Ayrshire Council's Education Department. The schools taking part this year were: Willowbank, Park, Doune Academy, Cumnock Academy and Loudoun Academy.

The young people all thoroughly enjoyed the programme which began with an interview to determine which of Hansel supported business they would be placed in: the Laundry, Lindy's (catering) or Grounds Maintenance. This and the week-long work placement focussed on gaining skills to increase their employability and provided a introduction to the world of work which was valued by the young people and by the Education Department.

The project has been so successful that we are in the process of planning for next year so we can offer this opportunity to more young adults in transition. We hope to be able to extend the project Ayrshire-wide in the future.

This is just one of Hansel's Employment Services initiatives. We also recently Launched Enterprising Minds, a ground-breaking project support people living with learning disabilities and autism to explore enterprise and entrepreneurship is a means of providing meaningful activity and, perhaps, personal income.
