Courtyard House 5 Bathroom Renovation Appeal

House 5 in the Courtyard forms part of the residential accommodation at Hansel. It is home to four residents who all have significant support needs and are all wheelchair users. They all enjoy living together in the small group living accommodation in House 5 with support on hand 24/7. They are also close to their neighbours within the wider Courtyard community and enjoy visits from their friends and family whilst also being able to get out and about.

House 5 has been home to the residents for many years with the most recent person moving in six years ago with another living here for over 25 years. Hansel is most certainly home to each and every one of them. They take pride in their home and have each decorated their individual bedroom they way they want it. However, there is one part of the house that is badly letting them down. The bathroom.

The accommodation was opened in 2000 and it’s fair to say that the bathroom hasn’t been updated since then. The layout of the room has become less practical, the bathroom fittings are showing signs of age and the specialist accessible bath is rusting and often breaks down. There is no shower facility so when the bathing facilities break down, there is no other washing facility within the house. This is a big challenge for the residents and the support team who care for them as it means a trip to the neighbouring houses to use their bathrooms. The bathroom is no longer a reliable space albeit one of the most important rooms in the house.

We need to raise a total of £32,000 to fully renovate and upgrade the bathroom. We’re not just replacing like for like. We want to go better and provide our residents with the choice of having a bath or a shower. We want to replace the current 20+ year old Arjo bath with a modern replacement that will be reliable (a new bath alone is around £15,000 and a bath chair £5,000) We want to make the space accessible and useable for both our residents and team members. 

The benefits of a bathroom renovation go wider than just having reliable equipment. It increases people’s independence by being able to offer the choice of a shower or a bath. Time can be used more efficiently and the whole environment will be far nicer and relaxing. All four residents value their bath time and look forward to it. Conversations open up, people are relaxed and really feel the benefit of the spa treatments that the Arjo bath can provide.
