Schools Programme 2015

Last month saw another successful schools work placement programme being delivered at Hansel in conjunction with East Ayrshire Council Education Department.
18 young people, from Willowbank, Grange, Park, Louden, Cumnock, Auchinleck and Hillside, attended work placements at Hansel over a period of 3 weeks. They spent time at the Laundry, Gardens, Baird Centre and Lindys finding out what a working week is like.
Elaine Wright (Transitional Support Worker, East Ayrshire Council) explained that the young people had gained a valuable experience in the world of work which, for many of them, appeared to be outwith their grasp in the mainstream work experience programme.
The welcome provided by all staff went a long way to ensuring that all the young people were put at ease from day one. Staff’s enthusiasm and willingness to mentor and support the pupils was matched by the pupil’s enthusiasm and willingness to work and learn. This, and the inclusive, positive working ethos at Hansel, was evidenced in the comments received from the young people, including “I want a job there” and “when can I go back”.
