Well done to Amy Louise Richardson from Kilmarnock Academy who won the Hansel short story competition and took home a Kindle Fire!
‘Burn Boy’ by Amy Louise Richardson from Kilmarnock Academy was chosen out of more than 200 entries from 5 Ayrshire Schools. The story, which was to be based on the theme ‘Overcoming’, is about a young boy who suffers the devastating effects of a house fire.
The judging panel, which included Shari Low, writer and Daily Record columnist, children’s author Lari Don and Jo Dingley from Canongate said they found it difficult to select the winner. However Amy Louise’s tale about a boy who is left with burns from head to toe stood out with its inspiring message about coming to terms with injury and moving forward with dignity.
Amy and her friend visited Hansel this afternoon to collect her prize of a Kindle and enjoyed a tour around the Hansel grounds to find out more about the services we offer here.
This is the second year we have run the short story competition, with a great response from schools throughout Ayrshire. Thank you and well done to everyone who took part.
The short story competition will be running next year for Primary 7 pupils in Ayrshire. If you or your school is interested in taking part please contact Sheila McLean on 01563 831428 or email Sheila.firstname.lastname@example.org
