Despite the unseasonal weather, the event was a big success raising an estimated £3,500 for the development of the outdoor area around the Baird Centre, our fantastic new community resource.
Scott Brown from SBFitness took time out from his London Marathon training to start the proceedings with a warm up session assisted by Ayr United midfielder Robbie Crawford and forward Michael Moffat.
Depute Provost Mary Kilpatrick blew the starter’s horn setting runners off on their 5k and 10k runs round the country estate.
Runners of all ages and abilities took part in the event with the oldest participant Nora Harris (83) being pushed round in her wheelchair by her carer from Abeyfield Nursing Home in Irvine.
First over the finish line for the 5k race was Jim Sneddon from Irvine who completed the course in just 20 minutes 14 seconds. Mauchline man Stuart Murdoch won the 10k winner’s medal in an impressive 38 minutes 32 seconds.
Our Fundraising Co-ordinator, Sheila McLean, said: “When we saw the weather we were really worried that nobody was going to show but everybody came along and there was a terrific atmosphere despite the rain.
“Luckily the skies cleared by the time the runners started although everyone got very muddy, and there was a final downpour just as the last of the 10k runners were coming in.
“It was a great day and it was fantastic to see so many happy faces across the finish line including a group of 36 pupils from Ayr Academy who took part with their teachers.”
